How much does Etsy take per sale?
For a typical US sale with no ads involved, Etsy takes about 9.5% of the order total plus $0.45 in fixed fees — roughly 10–12% of a typical order once the fixed fees are counted. That's three separate charges stacked on one sale: a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee calculated on everything the buyer pays you (item price plus shipping plus gift wrap), and Etsy Payments processing at 3% + $0.25 for US sellers. None of them is dramatic on its own, which is exactly why most sellers can't say what their real fee rate is.
Then come the multipliers. If a buyer clicks one of Etsy's Offsite Ads before purchasing, Etsy adds 15% of the order total (12% if your shop cleared $10,000 in the trailing 12 months — at which point the program stops being optional), capped at $100 per order. If your listing currency doesn't match your payout currency, a 2.5% currency conversion fee applies. An Offsite-Ads sale can push the total take past 25% — a quarter of the order, before you've paid for materials or postage.
A worked example: the $30 sale
Here's the arithmetic for a $30 item with $5 shipping, sold organically by a US seller — the same sale we use throughout this library:

Now the same sale, attributed to an Offsite Ad at 15%: Etsy adds $5.25, total fees hit $9.03 — 25.8% of the order — and you keep $25.97. Same product, same buyer, same $35; nearly a fifth of your margin gone because of which link the buyer happened to click. That's the number worth knowing before you set your prices, not after.

Does the 6.5% transaction fee apply to shipping? Yes. Since 2022, the transaction fee applies to the full amount the buyer pays: item + shipping + gift wrap. "Free shipping" with the cost baked into your price doesn't dodge the fee — it just moves the same dollars into the item column.
Is the listing fee really only $0.20? Per listing, per four months, yes — and it auto-renews. If a buyer purchases multiple quantities in one order, each item triggers its own $0.20 renewal, which is why the calculator multiplies it by quantity. It's the smallest fee on the list; it's also the only one you pay whether or not anything sells.
What isn't in this calculator? Etsy Ads (the on-site kind) are a budget you set, not a per-sale percentage, so they're yours to add on top. Regulatory operating fees apply in some countries (Canada 1.15%, UK 0.32%, France 0.47%, among others) and aren't modeled here. Neither are optional subscriptions like Etsy Plus ($10/month) or the one-time new-shop setup fee ($15–29).
